Summer Holiday Wardrobe

Getting the suitcases down from the loft is the start of any holiday for me. Despite the temptation to sew new things for every getaway, I have some firm favourites that come with me anytime I'm heading for some sunshine. I'm going to share some of my top patterns for a holiday wardrobe.

  1. This beach cover up is an extra special fave as the fabric came from a holiday in Spain (I always try and leave some room in my case for fabric purchases in far flung places and do some research for likely shops before we go). The shop was Julian Lopez in Seville and I would highly recommend a visit to this beautiful building if you are in the area. Its a crinkle silk chiffon and crumples up into almost nothing in the case but always make me feel glam. The pattern is New Look 6283. I've made this in a cotton lawn as well and it looks lovely too but a bit more everyday.

2. The Sauguaro Set by Friday Pattern Company. I made this is a lightweight viscose lawn and it is equally good for dressing up at night and wearing to go sightseeing in the heat. In the last pic, you can see that I have turned the top around to provide more coverage (both for modesty and protection from the sun). I've also made this in a viscose linen and made in a plain fabric, would be great as separates.

3. The Zadie jumpsuit / playsuit is another firm favourite. An all-in-one outfit that just needs a statement necklace and shoes and always feels put together. It also has waist ties - so great for going out to eat! I've made a short version in a linen Ikat and a couple of full length versions in a linen viscose (one for my daughter as well - and it goes on every holiday with her too!)

4. A good camisole pattern made in silk (or viscose) is a must. Great for wearing on its own or with a little cardi or jacket. I love working with silk - it makes me feel very luxe and for this cami pattern I can get away with only 1m of a decent width fabric. It takes up no room at all in the case. The pics show the Ogden Cami by True Bias patterns - but I've also recently enjoyed making the Helen's Closet Ashton top - which is slightly wider on the shoulders - so easier to wear a bra with.

5. Finally, no holiday wardrobe is complete without shorts. My favourite pattern for shorts is actually a PJ pattern! It's the Carolyn Pyjamas from Closet Core. I've made half a dozen or more versions of this over the years - mainly in a plain colour linen. Nice pockets and a comfy elasticated waistband - perfect for a walk on the beach. I also like the Pietra Pants short version (seen here in the blue floral with a matching top made using the Megan Nielson Dove blouse pattern) - very flattering as they have a nice flat front panel.
