What's Your Dressmaking Personality?
A kind lady recently commented on one of my Instagram posts 'Love it - that's very you' and it started me thinking about what makes an outfit 'me' or 'you'
I guess it's a mixture of things; colour palette, texture of fabrics, shape or fit of garment and then there's a certain something about how we wear our clothes and add accessories?
Colours
I like the idea of having my 'colours done'and have saved suggestions about what my colour season might be on Pintrest. Based on my guess work I think I'm either a Warm Spring or a Soft Autumn. But actually this is really just a jumping off point because if I'm drawn to a fabric or colour, then I'm going to wear it regardless of any self imposed rules. Have you ever had your colours done? Has it influenced what you make or buy?
Textures
I'm always drawn to natural fibres - linen, wool, cotton and silk. I love something with a bit of texture and always stroke the fabrics I'm looking at (whether ready to wear items or a roll of fabric). I recently made a boiled wool jacket and every time I put in on, I give myself a little hug of joy. A very happy moment for me was when I took my son shopping for his birthday and he picked out a shirt he liked - but then touched the fabric and said 'oh no, that fabric doesn't feel good' I'm so glad he's thinking about the way clothes and fabrics feel.
Shape
This is tricky for me as I think I'm a bit of a chameleon where shape and fit is concerned. I know that closer fitting garments are more flattering to my body shape but I'm always interested in the latest fashions and sometimes the trendy shapes can make me look shorter / plumper / add your own unflattering adjectives! Does this matter? After over half a century on this earth I'm coming to realise it's more about how you feel and if you feel good in something, then embrace that. I'm all about having fun with my clothes.
Wear the red shoes
I'm a fool for a bold accessory - chunky necklaces in every colour, shoes that steal the show, a statement handbag and scarves forever! And I think this is a big part of my signature style.
What do you think makes an outfit 'YOU'? Hopefully this will help you to make more things that you wear and feel good in.
Happy Sewing!
Jo xx
I absolutely and totally agree with you that texture and colour is the key to happiness! 😂 I have always described my style as conservative with a twist - until I discovered the pure joy of sewing my own clothes! It’s taken me this long (I’m 49) to discovering I’m can wear so much more styles and colours than I would ever have dared simply because the pleasure is in the fact that I made it! I was given metres of pure cashmere and made a long lined coat with it and my hear does a leap when I put it on as the feel of cashmere is so amazing! I also get some funny looks sometimes with a choice…
